The End of Your Life Book Club

Will Schwalbe – 2012

Rating: ♣♣♣ (3) liked.

Description: The author and his mother share their love of books by creating their own book club. This reading together helps them share their hopes and concerns with each other while his mother is dying of cancer.

What I thought:

I loved the elements of their relationships and the experience told of a child dealing with the fact of a dying parent. I could relate because my father had also died of cancer. I liked to hear what they thought of books they read together it made me want to read and write more often but, I did not like the author telling so much about what the books were about because it kind of ruined the idea of reading some of those books myself. I like that the book was celebrating her life and attitudes. Towards the end I wanted to hear more about them and family then the books they read or work they did.

A favorite passage in the book:

” We all owe everyone for everything that happens in our lives. But it’s not owing like a debt to one person – it’s really that we owe everyone for everything. Our whole lives can change in an instant – so each person who keeps that from happening, no matter how small a role they play, is also responsible for all of it. Just by giving friendship and love, you keep the people around you form giving up – and each expression of friendship or love may be the one that makes all the difference.” –a letter by the authors mom in the book.
